Settling the body, speech, and mind
Before entering the subtler stages of Dzogchen practice, practitioners first learn to settle body, speech, and mind into a state of relaxed stability. This creates the ground for recognizing awareness.

Settling the Body:
- The body should be stable yet relaxed, often in the seven-point posture of Vairochana (cross-legged, spine upright, shoulders relaxed, hands resting in the lap, etc.).
- Physical stillness supports mental stillness and allows energy to flow naturally.
- A balanced posture prevents sleepiness and agitation.
Settling the Speech:
- In Dzogchen, speech refers both to outer voice and inner subtle energy (breath).
- Practitioners may begin with gentle breathing exercises to release tension.
- Mantra recitation, such as OM AH HUM, helps align speech with awareness and dissolve distractions.
- Eventually, silence becomes the natural resting of speech, neither suppressed nor distracted.
Settling the Mind:
- The mind is encouraged to rest naturally without force.
- Instead of suppressing thoughts, practitioners allow them to arise and dissolve without interference.
- Attention is gently placed on awareness itself rather than chasing after mental objects.
- The key is relaxation without dullness and alertness without tension.
Why This is Essential in Semde:
- Semde (Mind Series) emphasizes direct recognition of awareness. If the body, speech, and mind are restless, recognition is easily obscured.
- Settling creates a calm, clear base where awareness can reveal itself.
- It harmonizes the three gateways—body, speech, and mind—so they support one another in resting naturally.
Practical Reminder:
- Body: stable and relaxed.
- Speech: calm, aligned with breath or mantra.
- Mind: open, resting without grasping.
In summary, settling body, speech, and mind is the foundation of Dzogchen practice in the Semde series. It allows practitioners to enter the natural state with ease and prepares the way for deeper recognition of rigpa.
