Tögal (leap-over practices)

Tögal, or 'leap-over,' is one of the two central practices of the Menngagde series. While Trekchö emphasizes primordial purity, Tögal reveals spontaneous presence through visionary experiences.

What is Tögal?

  • Tögal means ‘direct crossing’ or ’leap-over.’
  • It involves special methods that reveal the luminous display of rigpa (lhündrup).
  • Whereas Trekchö cuts through rigidity to recognize primordial purity, Tögal brings forth the natural expression of awareness as light and visions.

How Tögal Works:

  • Practiced under strict guidance of a qualified master due to its depth and intensity.
  • Uses body postures, gaze techniques, and subtle channels to open visionary experiences.
  • Practitioners often gaze into the sky, sunlight, or darkness to reveal displays of rainbow lights and spheres.

Stages of Tögal Visions:

  1. Dots and lights (thigle): Small spheres of light appear.
  2. Expansion and networks: Lights form into patterns and mandalas.
  3. Deities and palaces: Visionary appearances of Buddhas and pure lands.
  4. Dissolution into reality: Visions self-liberate, revealing ultimate reality.

Purpose of Tögal:

  • These visions are not fantasies but direct manifestations of rigpa.
  • They show the inseparability of emptiness and appearance.
  • Tögal accelerates realization, bringing practitioners toward the final stages of the path, including rainbow body attainment.

Relation to Trekchö:

  • Trekchö establishes certainty in primordial purity (kadak).
  • Tögal reveals the spontaneous presence (lhündrup) of that purity.
  • Together, they complete the realization of Dzogchen.

Why Tögal Requires Guidance:

  • The experiences can be powerful and transformative, but without correct view, they may be misunderstood as hallucinations.
  • Authentic teachers ensure the visions are integrated correctly as expressions of awareness.

Summary: Tögal is the Dzogchen practice of directly revealing awareness through visionary displays. It is called a ’leap-over’ because it swiftly carries the practitioner toward complete realization, culminating in the union of primordial purity and spontaneous presence.

Approaching Tögal visions with stability

Approaching Tögal visions with stability

Tögal practices reveal luminous visionary experiences, but they must be approached from a foundation of stability in Trekchö and recognition of rigpa. Without stability, visions can confuse rather than liberate.

Light and visionary experiences

Light and visionary experiences

In Tögal and other Menngagde practices, practitioners may encounter extraordinary experiences of light, colors, and visionary appearances. These are understood as natural displays of awareness, not external phenomena.

Rainbow body teachings

Rainbow body teachings

The rainbow body is one of the most profound teachings in Dzogchen. It describes the dissolution of the practitioner’s body into light at the culmination of Tögal practice and realization of rigpa.

Rainbow body as culmination of practice

Rainbow body as culmination of practice

The rainbow body is regarded in Dzogchen as the supreme sign of complete realization. It represents the full integration of Trekchö and Tögal, where the practitioner’s body dissolves into light at death.
